Yesterday, Google took the wraps off of its brand new virtual reality platform, called Daydream. Google offered up some a bit of info on its plans during yesterday’s I/O keynote, but today Google held a dedicated Daydream session at I/O, and it revealed a huge new piece of info about the platform.
Google has confirmed that it will sell its own virtual reality hardware in addition to licensing a design to partners. There aren’t many details about Google’s plans, but for a peek at the Daydream reference design, you can see images of both the headset and controller at the top of this post.
It’s not too surprising to learn that Google will offer its own virtual reality hardware. Not only have previous rumors suggested that that would be the case, but Google already offers its Cardboard VR viewer, so why not follow a Nexus-like strategy and offer its own Daydream VR hardware, too? Google has said that the first VR headsets and controllers using its reference designs should launch this fall, so perhaps we’ll see Google’s own hardware around that time, too.
