Wireless charging is a feature that’s available in many Android and Windows Phone devices, but it hasn’t yet made its way to the iPhone. According to a new report, though, Apple is working to change that.
Apple is working on a new wireless charging tech that would allow iPhones and iPads to be charged over a distance, sources tell Bloomberg. Apple and its partners in the US and Asia are working on solving the issues related with power loss over a distance so that the wireless charging tech can be included in future devices.
While Apple is still working on the tech, today’s report suggests that the wireless charging feature could debut in the iPhone as soon as 2017.
The Apple Watch charges wirelessly when you plop it onto its small pad, but today’s report suggests that Apple wants to cook up something better for the iPhone. It’s certainly possible that Apple is interested in adding wireless charging to the iPhone, but the company wants to offer a better solution that doesn’t require the iPhone to be resting on a pad in order to be charged. Of course, all of this is a rumor for now, and even if Apple is working on this tech, it could ultimately decide not to use it in a public product.
