When Mailbox originally launched in February 2013, it garnered a lot of attention for only being available to folks that received an invitation. Fast-forward two and a half years and the app is officially shutting down.
Dropbox has announced that its killing off Mailbox and Carousel. Dropbox acquired the Mailbox email app in March 2013 and eventually launched Android and Mac versions of the email client. However, the app has largely been ignored in recent months. I’ve been using the Mac app, or at least trying to, and it’s got some major bugs that’ve gone unaddressed for a couple of months.
Meanwhile, Carousel is a photo management app that was meant to help you organize and better view the images that you had stored in your Dropbox. The company says that in the year and a half since Carousel’s launch, most users have indicated that they “prefer the convenience and simplicity of interacting with their photos directly inside of Dropbox.”
Mailbox will officially shut down on February 26, 2016, while Carousel will live on until March 31, 2016. While I never used Carousel, it’s kind of disappointing to see Mailbox go, as it was at one time a nice-looking app that made it easy to power through emails with a swipe-centric UI. The good news is that there are several other email apps available for Mailbox users to migrate to, and Dropbox is also offering guides and export tools to help you move to another app.
