Shortly after AT&T announced that it’ll begin selling the Lumia 950 this week, Microsoft has started taking pre-orders for the bigger Lumia 950 XL.
The Lumia 950 XL is available in black and white, but no matter which model you choose, you can expect to pony up $649. Microsoft is offering a free Display Dock with the purchase of a Lumia 950 XL when you register in the Lumia Offers app between November 25 and January 31. The Display Dock lets you connect your Lumia 950 XL (or Lumia 950) to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and then use the phone like a traditional PC.
Microsoft says that pre-ordered Lumia 950 XL units will ship by November 25.
As its name suggests, the Lumia 950 XL is the bigger brother of the Lumia 950 that offers a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 AMOLED screen that’s bigger than the 950’s 5.2-inch screen. The Lumia 950 XL also has an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD slot, and a replaceable 3340mAh battery with Qi wireless charging and fast charging. The XL offers a 20-megapixel rear camera with triple LED flash and optical image stabilization as well as a 5-megapixel wide angle front camera, too.
In terms of cellular support, this unlocked Lumia 950 XL supports 850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, and 2100MHz HSPA as well as LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, and 28. That means that it ought to work on AT&T and T-Mobile, though we’ll have to wait and see if it’ll play nicely with T-Mo’s Extended Range LTE coverage.
It’s been quite a long time since we last saw a flagship Windows smartphone, so it’s exciting to see the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL finally getting close to store shelves and our hands. The 950 XL is the first phablet to come with Windows 10 Mobile preinstalled, and while its design doesn’t deviate greatly from past Lumia phones, it’s still a nice-looking device. And if you’re interested in a flagship Windows smartphone, it’s one of your only options right now.
