Verizon’s DROID family has been around for a long time, and today it gained two new members thanks to Motorola.
Verizon has officially revealed the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID Maxx 2. The DROID Turbo 2 is the higher-end of the two, offering a 5.4-inch 2560x1440 AMOLED display. That screen is one of the highlights of the Turbo 2 because it features Motorola’s Moto ShatterShield technology, which is protected against shattering and cracking for four years.
Another big draw of the Turbo 2 is its Moto Maker support. That makes it the first DROID phone to support Motorola’s customization tool. With Moto Maker, you can give your Turbo 2 a soft grip plastic, ballistic nylon, or leather backside. You can also choose your accent colors and event have a message laser etched onto the phone’s backside.
The DROID Turbo 2’s full spec list includes Android 5.1 — with an update to Android 6.0 coming — a 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot for adding more storage, and 3GB of RAM. There’s also a beefy 3760mAh battery that Verizon says will last up to 48 hours on a single charge. The battery supports TurboPower, too, which is a fast charge tech that can give you up to 13 hours of battery life in 15 minutes. Rounding out the Turbo 2’s spec list is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with wide-angle lens and flash, as well as a 21-megapixel rear shooter.
Also revealed today is the DROID Maxx 2. The Maxx 2 isn’t quite as high-end as the Turbo 2, but it does offer a larger 5.5-inch 1920x1080 display. Also packed into the Maxx 2’s body is a 3630mAh battery that’ll give you up to 48 hours of battery life on a single charge. That battery can also use TurboPower fast charging to get 8 hours of battery life in 15 minutes.
The Maxx 2 features a 21-megapixel camera on its backside, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, a microSD slot that supports cards up to 128GB in size. And while it won’t be customizable through Moto Maker, the Maxx 2 will support interchangeable backs and flip covers to give your device a bit of your personality. The Maxx 2 will come wiht Android 5.1 pre-installed, but Verizon says that an Android 6.0 update is coming.
Both the Turbo 2 and Maxx 2 will launch this Thursday, October 29, in Verizon stores and online. Verizon says that it’s accepting smartphone trade-ins for the Turbo 2 and that it’ll give you up to $300 off the new device, even if your old phone’s screen is cracked.
