Along with its new Band fitness tracker and Lumia smartphones, Microsoft today unveiled a new Surface: the Surface Pro 4.
The Surface Pro 4 features a 12.3-inch display at 267ppi in the same footprint as the Surface Pro 3’s 12-inch display. Microsoft did this by shrinking the bezels on the Surface Pro 4. The display also includes what Microsoft calls PixelSense technology, which includes 0.4mm-thick Gorilla Glass and a 1.1mm backlight unit.
Under the hood, the Surface Pro 4 offers an Intel Core processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. Those features are packed into a body that’s 8.4mm thick, down from the Surface Pro 3’s 9.1mm-thick body.
As before, Surface Pro 4 owners will have a couple of options when it comes to input (aside from the touchscreen, of course). There’s a new Type Cover keyboard that’s thinner than previous versions and includes a 40 percent larger trackpad, fingerprint reader, and a backlit keyboard. The new Type Cover will be available in 5 colors and will be compatible with both the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 3.
Also included with the Surface Pro 4 is a new Surface Pen. The new pen has 1,024 points of pressure, an eraser on its back, and a battery that Microsoft says is year-long. The new Surface Pen will be available in 5 colors — silver, black, gold, red, and blue — and it includes interchangeable tips.
The Surface Pro 4 will be available for pre-order on October 7 and will launch on October 26. Pricing will start at $899.
Microsoft today also revealed the Surface Book, its first laptop. The Surface Book has a 13.5-inch display at 267ppi that uses the same PixelSense tech found in the Surface Pro 4. And if you’d like, you can remove the display from the keyboard to use the 13.5-inch screen all on its own. And while the GPU is stored in the keyboard, you can also dock the screen into the keyboard with the screen facing out so that you can use it like a tablet while still getting to use the GPU.
Also included are 6th generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors, an NVIDIA GeForce GPU, and GDDR5 memory, all of which Microsoft says makes the Surface Book twice as powerful as Apple’s MacBook Pro. The Surface Book has a glass trackpad with five points of touch and a backlit keyboard as well, and its battery is rated to last for 12 hours.
The Surface Book will be available for pre-order on October 7 and will launch on October 26. It’ll start at $1,499.
