Cortana is going cross-platform.

Yep, Microsoft just announced that it’s releasing Cortana for both Android and iPhone. The digital assistant will help Android and iOS users do most of the things that it does on Windows hardware, says Microsoft, including reminding you of tasks and updating you on flights. Because Cortana won’t have deep built-in functionality on Android and iOS like it does on Windows, though, features like toggling settings and launching apps won’t be available on Cortana, at least not “initially.”

Cortana for Android and iOS is part of Microsoft’s new Phone Companion app for Windows 10. The app will help Windows 10 users to connect their PC to their phone, regardless of whether that phone is running Windows, Android or iOS. If you’ve got a non-Windows phone, the Phone Companion app will help you to set up apps like Cortana, OneDrive, and Skype on your phone so that all of the files and information on your PC are also available on your phone.

Microsoft says that Cortana will launch on Android at the end of June and on iPhones “later this year.” The Phone Companion app will be available in a Windows 10 Insider Preview build in the coming weeks.

Cortana for Android and iOS is a bit reminiscent of Google Now on iOS in that it’ll let you have access to your personal data, will learn what you like, and will alert you to important reminders and events, but that it’ll offer the best experience on its home platform. Still, it’s nice to see Cortana expanding to Android and iOS, and I’m sure that Windows 10 users that don’t plan on switching to Windows 10 Mobile will be pleased to learn that they’ll be able to get their PC’s digital assistant on their phone, too.
