With just a couple of days to go before the Apple Watch begins hitting our wrists, many app developers are updating their iOS apps with support for Apple’s new wearable. Since we don’t actually have an Apple Watch yet, we haven’t been able to see what these Apple Watch apps look like, but today we’re getting a peek at some apps thanks to a new tool.
Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has put together a small Mac app that lets you look up an iOS app, and if it’s got an Apple Watch version available, the app will display screenshots for the wearable version of the app. Several popular apps have already been updated with Apple Watch support, including Twitter, Instagram, Shazam, Evernote, ESPN, Starbucks, and Yahoo Weather.
Most of these apps look a lot like shrunken versions of their iPhone counterparts. For example, the Twitterific app uses a lot of bright colors, and the Starbucks app has the same rewards meter as its iPhone app. However, since Apple Watch apps are extensions of their iOS counterparts and there’s no full Apple Watch SDK available yet, it’s not surprising that many Apple Watch apps are reminiscent of their iOS siblings. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and I’m sure that anyone that’s pre-ordered an Apple Watch is happy to see so many major apps gaining support for the iOS smartwatch ahead of its official launch.
