Facebook today announced a new feature for Facebook Messenger that aims to make the app even more important in your daily life.
Facebook Messenger is gaining the ability to let you send money to your friends. The feature, which will roll out over the coming months, requires only that you tap the $ icon in the row of buttons above your keyboard while you’re in a conversation. You then type in the amount that you way to send, tap the Pay button in the upper right corner, and you’re set. You can also receive money by adding a debit card to your profile.
Facebook says that the money is transferred immediately, but that money received may take one to three days to become available depending on your bank.
We’ve seen many different apps add support for sending and receiving money lately, including Snapchat. The goal is to make the app more integral to your daily life by letting you quickly send money to friends rather than having to go to an ATM or meet the friend to hand over cash. Facebook wants to make Messenger your go-to method of sending and receiving money from friends, making its app a more important part of your life in the process.
