Android’s already in a lot of places. It’s on our phones and tablets, on our wrists, in our cars, and on our televisions. Now Google’s little green robot is apparently going to invade another space.
A team of Google employees is working on a version of Android for virtual reality, says the Wall Street Journal. Google’s team of “tens of engineers” is reportedly begin headed up by Clay Bavor and Jeremy Doig, the former of which helped to create the Google Cardboard virtual reality headset. Google reportedly plans to make this Android for VR OS free to use.
Virtual reality hasn’t really caught on with mainstream consumers yet; at this point, most consumers probably haven’t even used a modern VR headset. There’s a lot of interest in the category lately, though, with companies like Samsung, HTC, Valve, and Facebook all building VR devices. With all of the interest in VR lately, it’s no surprise to hear that Google may be trying to build a version of Android for VR devices so that it can get a piece of that market, just like it has with smartphones, tablets, wearables, vehicle entertainment systems, and TVs.
