UPDATE: BlackBerry has issued a statement to Business Insider regarding the Samsung acquisition rumors. BlackBerry says that while it’s aware of the reports, it “has not engaged with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry.”
UPDATE 2: Samsung has issued a statement to Reuters on this rumor. A spokeswoman for the company described the reports as “groundless.”
It’s been a while since we’ve heard any rumors about companies possibly buying BlackBerry, but today that rumor mill is churning once again.
According to Reuters, Samsung recently offered to buy BlackBerry for up to $7.5 billion. This is according to a source as well as documents seen by Reuters. It’s said that Samsung is interested in BlackBerry’s patent portfolio. Executives from both firms reportedly met as recently as last week to discuss the deal.
While BlackBerry isn’t exactly taking the mobile world by storm anymore, it’s certainly got an impressive patent portfolio thanks to its years and years of mobile experience. Samsung could utilize those patents in its own devices, especially if it’d like to try to beef up its own Tizen operating system. Of course, this is all very much a rumor for now, so it’s unclear if a deal between these two will ever go down.
Do you think it’d be smart for Samsung to buy BlackBerry?
