Alongside the N3, Oppo today took the wraps off a new device dubbed the R5.

The Oppo R5’s claim to fame is its thickness. The device measures in at just 4.85mm thick, which is said to make it the thinnest smartphone in the world. Oppo has included a “Cool Element” in the R5 to help absorb heat that the R5’s internals generate inside of its thin body.

Another big feature of the Oppo R5 is its camera. It’s a 13-megapixel Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, and Oppo has thrown in a few special camera tricks of its own. Those include Tracking Focus, Pure Image stitching feature that can compose 50-megapixel photos and the ability to change the focus of a photo after its been taken.

Packed inside of the Oppo R5’s 4.85mm-thick frame is a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED display with 180 degree visibility, 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE and a 2000mah battery. Oppo is included is VOOC mini Rapid Charger that can give you two hours of talk time in five minutes or 75 percent battery capacity in 30 minutes.

Expect the Oppo R5 to be available in December for $499. It’ll come with an aluminum frame and Oppo’s ColorOS 2.0 running beneath Android 4.4.

Many past devices that have focused on thinness as a feature have had to make a trade-off in order to achieve that thinness. The Oppo R5 sounds like a pretty nice package, though, offering a big, high-res display and octa-core processor. The R5’s camera does appear to protrude a bit, and its battery could be a tad small, but we’ll have to see how those factors come into play in our full review of the Oppo R5.
