When I look back at my favorite phones, or think about individual handsets that have stood out to me, HTC is a company that just keeps popping up. Like today, with the first real look at the HTC One M8 for Windows. I'll be the first to say that that's a terrible name for a phone, but there has been worse. Seeing it in an official press render, though, makes me realize that my desires to have this phone running Windows Phone are still there, and I can't wait to test it out.

I was honestly thinking about HTC earlier in the day, though, because I was thinking about the Nexus brand. I haven't been able to get the "Shamu" out of my head since its name initially broke cover in July. I'm thinking about it, going back and forth with it, not because of the codename (even though that would still be better than "One M8 for Windows"), but because of the rumored manufacturer behind it.

It's not that I'm upset that HTC isn't being rumored (as they usually are, every year), or even that I don't want Motorola to make a Nexus-branded device. In fact, I do want Motorola to make a Nexus smartphone. I think that would be pretty great, actually, and it's probably a longtime coming all things considered.

I'm on the fence with the Nexus Shamu. The Shamu Nexus. And this marks the first time that I've ever not just been . . . excited for a Nexus phone. Even when the GALAXY Nexus wasn't really a Nexus phone, and wasn't even the best of the lineup, I was excited about it. I have a thing for Nexus, I guess, and the fact that they've gotten better, and even more aggressive with pricing, it's hard not to like them.

But, the moment the "Nexus 6" title started to get bandied about, I pretty much had fears pop up. That told me that the phone was going to be too big. And now that the Shamu rumors have started, with a device that's measured in at 5.9-inches, the naming schemes lined up. And unfortunately, it's immediately making me disinterested in the upcoming handset.

So this is a first for me. For yearly refreshes, the Nexus brand is one of those things I get excited about. Even if it is just to watch it sell out in a matter of minutes. So, unless something changes -- and I really hope something changes -- this might be where I jump off the Nexus train.

I know that many of you are okay with giant displays for your smartphone, but where do you draw the line? Are you eager to pick up the Shamu, or Nexus 6, if it does have a 5.9-inch display? Or will you be skipping it like I (probably) will be?
