BlackBerry today announced its earnings for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2015, revealing a mixture of good news and not-so-good news.
BlackBerry says that during Q1 FY15 it pulled in $966 million in revenue, which is $10 million less than its Q4 FY14 revenue. GAAP net income for the quarter finished at $23 million. After adjusting that amount to include things like BlackBerry’s restructuring program charges, the company’s loss totaled $60 million.
On the hardware side of things, BlackBerry says that it sold 2.6 million smartphones to consumers. However, BlackBerry didn’t say how many of those were BlackBerry 7 phones and how many were BlackBerry 10 units, so it’s not clear what that breakdown was like.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen also shared some good news for consumers during the Q1 FY15 earnings call. Chen revealed that the BlackBerry Windermere (pictured above) will officially be known as the “BlackBerry Passport” and that the device will make its official debut in September. The CEO also gave us a release window for the Windows Phone version of BBM, saying that the app will launch in July.
Overall it looks like BlackBerry’s report was a mixed bag. It’s good to learn more about the BlackBerry Passport, and the news that the Windows Phone version of BBM is near is good for the messaging service. On the other hand, BlackBerry’s hardware sales dropped 0.8 million units from the previous quarter, and the fact that it didn’t break out BlackBerry 7 and BlackBerry 10 sales could suggest that BB10 isn’t doing as hot as BlackBerry would like.
