For the past several years, Android purists have looked forward to the launch of a new Nexus smartphone, knowing that the devices will run a completely vanilla version of Google’s mobile OS and receive updates before most other devices. It looks like those folks may not have a Nexus phone to look forward to this year, though, as a new rumor claims that “there is no Nexus 6.”
Prolific leakster @evleaks has sent out a tweet claiming that there is no Nexus 6 smartphone in the works, adding the words “Farewell, Nexus” to his message. It’s not all bad news, though, because he followed that up with a tweet that reads “Don’t worry, there’s a silver lining to this cloud…”
These tweets are likely in reference to Android Silver, the program that Google is reportedly planning to replace the Nexus line with. A report that surfaced in late April said that Android Silver will see Google collaborate with device makers to create high-end Android phones that will have a limited number of non-Google apps. Like the Nexus phones, Android Silver devices are expected to receive prompt updates and have a consistent user experience.
Google will reportedly spend heavily to promote these Android Silver devices, both in carrier stores and elsewhere, and that El Goog will use in-store kiosks to display both the Silver hardware and software. It’s said that Motorola and LG may be first in line to participate in Android Silver.
While still unconfirmed at this point, this rumor appears to be gaining steam. It’s not known exactly why Google is ditching the Nexus brand for Android Silver, but it’s possible that the company could use Silver as a way to release more phones with its version of Android. It would do this by partnering with several manufacturers, rather than just a single one each year like it does with the Nexus line, and also by promoting the Silver devices in stores where consumers are likely to see them.
