Apple and Motorola have been at each others throats in courts for several years now, but it looks like the two companies have finally settled their longstanding litigation.
In a statement given to Reuters, Apple and Motorola say that they’ve agreed to settle all of the smartphone patent lawsuits that’s going on between them. The agreement doesn’t include any kind of patent cross-licensing agreement like some other settlements that we’ve seen, but the two firms have agreed to partner to work on “some areas of patent reform.”
We’ve seen a multitude of patent lawsuits filed between most mobile companies in recent years, and so it’s good to see two more firms reach a settlement. What’s better is that Apple and Motorola have agreed to work together on at least some parts of patent reform. We’ll have to wait and see what exactly they accomplish, but the fact that they’ve reached a settlement and will work together to make the patent system better is great news.
