AT&T today announced its earnings for the first quarter of 2014, and overall it looks like the big blue carrier had itself a pretty nice start to the year.
AT&T says that it added 1.062 million wireless subscribers in the quarter, including 625,000 postpaid net adds and 693,000 connected devices. Those gains helped to offset the 50,000 prepaid subs and 206,000 reseller users that AT&T lost during the quarter.
Looking at smartphones specifically, AT&T reports that it added 1.1 million postpaid smartphones in Q1 and that 78 percent of its postpaid subscriber base was using a smartphone at the end of the quarter. In total, AT&T sold 5.8 million smartphones in Q1 2014.
AT&T also touched a bit on its Mobile Share and AT&T Next offerings. The big blue carrier says that it now has nearly 33 million connections on Mobile Share plans and that 46 percent of customers on those shared data plans are signed up for 10GB of data or more. In all, around 81 percent of AT&T postpaid smartphone users are on a usage-based data plan.
There were about 2.9 million AT&T Next additions in the quarter, including 1.1 million accelerated smartphone upgrades.
Finally, AT&T says that its total wireless revenues for the quarter finished at $17.9 billion, which is a year-over-year growth of 7 percent.
