Remember that NVIDIA Shield update that I told you about back at the tail end of March? Well it’s rolling out today, and if you’ve got NVIDIA’s Android-powered handheld laying around, you may want to grab that sucker and check for this latest bundle of software.
As I explained last month, this new Shield update is a biggie. One of the biggest new features is the NVIDIA GRID Streaming Beta, which allows users to stream games from their home PC through the cloud and onto their Shield. They can even wake their PC and log into it remotely.
Other new gaming-related features that are included with this update is support for GameStream through notebook PCs that are equipped with the GeForce GTX 800M, GTX 700M, and select GTX 600M GPUs, keyboard and mouse compatibility, a makeover Gamepad Mapper app that includes a quick-access shortcut and an improved TegraZone app that will enable users to more easily discover games.
On the Android side of things, this update bumps the Shield up to Android 4.4.2. That’s currently the latest version of KitKat available to consumers.
You existing NVIDIA Shield owners can snag all of those goodies by grabbing your handheld and heading into Settings > About SHIELD > System Updates > Check Now. If you don’t yet have a Shield but have had your interest piqued by this latest update, you should know that NVIDIA is selling the device for $199 during the month of April.
