After launching its phone service with the HTC EVO Design and then adding the HTC EVO 4G, Sprint MVNO FreedomPop has announced that its lineup of phones is growing again. This time, though, the newcomer is a Samsung device.
FreedomPop announced today that it has added the Samsung Galaxy S II to its lineup. The latest addition to FreedomPop's family packs an 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 16GB of storage, an 1800mAh battery and WiMAX connectivity. Customers interested in making the Android-powered Galaxy S II the newest member of their own family can do so for an introductory price of $159.
Looking ahead, FreedomPop plans to begin offering some new LTE phones later in 2014. "We're working hard to add high quality devices to meet the growing demand from new users," said FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols. "The Samsung Galaxy II is our most advanced device to date and we plan to add even more high-end options in the weeks to come." Stokols went on to tease that his company is "working on the iPhone on a couple of different levels" and that it's also planning to expand to a second carrier in 2014.
Jumping over to the rate plan side of things, FreedomPop has rolled out new plans for your perusal. The first is a two-year plan that includes unlimited talk, text and 500MB of data each month at a price of $4.58 per month, though the company notes that the plan is billed as a one-time payment of $110.
There's also a one-year plan with the same unlimited talk, text and 500MB data bucket that's billed as a one-time payment of $79.99, which works out to a monthly total of $6.67. FreedomPop also offers monthly service for $10.99 and a "Basic" tier that includes 200 minutes, 500 texts and 500MB of data for free.
FreedomPop currently runs on Sprint's CDMA network, and while it recently launched a mobile hotspot that can access Sprint's LTE service, its phones use the less-widespread WiMAX technology. Still, FreedomPop's low prices make it worth a look for consumers in the hunt for affordable wireless service, especially with LTE-capable handsets and possibly even the iPhone coming down the pipeline.
