Remember the ZTE Optik? The 7-inch tablet was introduced by Sprint way back in February 2012 with 3G connectivity, Android 3.2 Honeycomb and a price of $99.99 with a two-year commitment. The Optik received an update or two and was offered for free with a qualifying smartphone purchase at one point before never being heard from again. The Optik name is back in the news today, though, because Sprint has introduced the successor to ZTE's tablet nearly two years after the debut of the original.
The ZTE Optik 2 features a 7-inch 1024x600 display, just like its predecessor, and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon MSM8625Q processor. The slate comes with 8GB storage built-in that can be supplemented with a microSD card, and there's also 1GB of RAM, 3G connectivity and a 4000mAh battery packed into the Optik 2's chassis. Rounding out the Optik 2's spec sheet is a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter.
Sprint says that the ZTE Optik 2 will launch with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, which is quite a step up from the Honeycomb software that its predecessor came preloaded with. Available now for $29.99 with a two-year commitment or $169.99 without, the Optik 2 is an affordable slate that's targeted at consumers that want a simple tablet that can get online, check email and maybe download a couple of apps. It's not likely to blow your hair back with its raw performance, but for its price, the Optik 2 could be a good option for someone that wants a basic slate with mobile data built-in.
