Remember that whole brouhaha surrounding the new LTE Nexus 7 and Verizon's refusal to activate the device on its network? The big red carrier said back in September that the Nexus 7 was going through its certification process and that it would be finished "shortly," but since then we haven't heard anything on the matter. That's changing today, as Verizon has issued a new statement to update us on what's going on.
Speaking to Android Police, Verizon says that it, Asus and Google found a "systems issue" during the Nexus 7's certification process that required both Asus and Google to make tweaks to Jelly Bean. With the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat right around the corner, though, the two companies apparently decided to have Verizon put its Nexus 7 certification process on hold until the tablet has been updated to Android 4.4.
It's kind of a bummer that the LTE Nexus 7 still isn't working on Verizon nearly two months after its launch, and the news that the wait will continue until the Nexus 7's KitKat update hits is even more disappointing. Google has said that it plans to update the Nexus 7 to Android 4.4 in the coming weeks, but that's the most precise information we've got on the timing of the update, so for now it's unclear exactly when LTE Nexus 7 owners will be able to use their tablet as a surfboard to ride Verizon's LTE airwaves.
