It's October 31, and there are a lot of people out there that will dress up today as their favorite scary things, walk around and get candy door-to-door or store-to-store. Kids will have fun and parents will eventually have to deal with sugar rushes. It's all in the name of good fun! But today, October 31, has a lot of potential this year, as rumors and leaks suggest that we could see a new device announced today.

I'm sure you've been watching the news, and keeping a watchful eye on anything related to the new Nexus. If you've never purchased a Nexus-branded device before, for whatever reason, this could be the year that you should jump on board -- if the leaks pan out, mind you. This year's handset is primed to be one of the best Nexus smartphones ever, based on the specifications the handset will reportedly tout.

And we've seen so many leaks about the specs that at this point, it can't help but feel like a done deal.

I don't usually get excited for a phone around its launch window, simply because I never actually plan on picking up a phone day one. (I recently did that with the iPhone 5s, and considering how quickly I returned that, I just assume now that my waiting was always for the better.) But something is different about today, and about the build-up for this particular handset. The Nexus 5 has looked good almost from the start, and now that we've got a clearer picture of what to expect, I can't help but be excited about it.

This time around, though, it's not just for the handset, either. Not just the hardware. Don't get me wrong, the hardware alone would be enough to get potential customers on board with a future purchase. It's going to be a powerful device, and it looks like a sleek one, too. That 5-inch 1080p display; the 16GB or 32GB options; the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked somewhere around 2GHz; the 8MP camera with optical image stabilization. The list goes on and on. Like I said, it would seem like we're looking at an impressive device.

It's also about the software this time around. And for me, more so than ever before, and yet I can't quite put my finger on why, exactly. After all, we don't know much about Android 4.4 KitKat yet, save for the commercial name. We've heard rumors, sure, and we've all got our expectations that get built up here and there. But the most recent leak talking about the software didn't help, either. It actually just made me want it more.

I love the idea that Google is creating software that is able to work on low-end hardware. If Android 4.4 really can "optimize memory use in every major component" and utilize memory-efficient apps for devices with as little as 512MB of RAM, then that sounds like a pretty nice picture. Plus, the reported improvements to Bluetooth, and with plenty of changes with NFC for wearable technology (like Glass!), Android 4.4 KitKat is just looking better and better.

This could be the one time that I'm actually looking forward to the software build of Android on a device as well as the hardware in equal measure. Well, not since the first Nexus's build of Android and HTC's hardware. And that's just it. I'm kind of getting that thrill again, and I just want Google to announce the thing already! My finger is practically already on the "Buy" button.
