Tomorrow, in the morning on the west coast and in the afternoon on the east coast, Apple will unveil a new iPhone. It'll probably look like the old iPhone, but with some tweaks under the hood. It'll probably be called the iPhone 5S. And, it'll probably come in a variety of moderately hued colors. All of that is still up in the air, despite the variety of leaks we've seen, again and again.
The only thing we know for certain? Apple has an event tomorrow. In fact, even the announcement of a new iPhone isn't guaranteed.
But, it's likely. So, we'll just keep on truckin' along like normal, talking about what's coming, and what we'd like to see. We already know half the story, for what it's worth. We've already seen iOS 7, and we've heard about its new features, months in advance.
There were some rumors about Apple changing things around. Some icons getting a makeover, and some other features that Apple didn't unveil at the initial announcement event. That could still be the case, but those rumors have all but died out. Even if it is, though, we can safely say that the majority of iOS 7 is here to stay.
Apple threw in some new features, but iOS 7 is basically about giving Apple's mobile platform a new look. Basically, they didn't fix what isn't broken, but they gave the machine a nice coat of paint. A coat of paint, mind you, that goes from the top-level down to the core. All of iOS 7 has changed, and there's no doubt in my mind that the wait was well worth it.
It was about time, at least.
Apple has their own strategy for iOS, and so far I think it's safe to say that it works. And while I'm an iOS user, and I'm certainly looking forward to the event tomorrow, I will admit that I'm beginning to feel something lacking. And, as you can tell from the title, I'm taking a bit of a tongue-in-cheek method to letting it all out.
I want more gimmicks in iOS. That's both sarcasm and not at the same time. There are features inside Android that may seem like gimmicks to some, even most if you base it on certain manufacturers, but you know what? Those gimmicks, those features, can make a device stand out. I mean, let's face it, just look at a Galaxy S 4 or even the new Galaxy Note 3. If those devices were bland, feature- or gimmick-less, no one would pay any attention to them. But, Samsung knows how to shove features into their phones to make them worthwhile.
Apple's plan of attack is to create an operating system that's stable, smooth and gets the job done when and where it needs to get done. And I get that. It works. They've done a good job with it. But I want more now. It honestly just comes down to the fact that I think there are plenty of smart people within the Cupertino-based headquarters to make an operating system with a little flare, with a few gimmicks in the software feature aspect.
Android's "Daydream" feature, for instance. I would absolutely love that on iOS, especially if there were apps that could tap into it, like Circa. That would be pretty amazing. But instead, iOS is still iOS. It gets the job done, yes, but leaving the flare up to certain apps --or apps in general-- isn't really cutting it for me anymore. I want iOS to offer up . . . more.
In any event, how do you feel about iOS? Do you think its feature set is anywhere near as good as Android's? Let me know what you think.
