Apple's upgrade cycle every year has been a point of contention for some people for quite some time. Ever since they originally unveiled the iPhone 3GS, and then cemented the idea with the iPhone 4S, the idea that the next iteration of the iPhone could just be a "minor" upgrade has managed to rub some people the wrong way. But, there's no denying that the iPhone 5 is quite a major difference from the original iPhone -- as long as you don't look at the software, right?

Later this year, Apple is expected to follow that same routine and announce an iPhone 5S. If history repeats itself, and I'm sure we all expect it to, this new device will feature some major upgrades in specific areas, but the body of the device will go ultimately unchanged. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the iPhone 5 is still one of the best designed devices out there, so that really shouldn't be a bad thing.

But that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from sticking with the idea that Apple, at some point in time in the future, will be changing things up. And, let's be clear, considering they've just introduced a major change to iOS's visuals, now is the best time to latch on to those new iPhone design rumors. Indeed, a new report from Reuters suggests that Apple is looking at new iPhone sizes in the range of 4.7- and 5.7-inches.

As I've said, if Apple just gave me an iPhone with a bigger display, I'd be a happy camper.

However, there was another part to that report that caught my attention, too. According to the sources speaking with Reuters, that cheap iPhone that people keep hearing about is still coming, and right now Apple is considering five or six different color schemes for it. That could mean you'll see an all green cheap iPhone at some point down the line.

Or, as we've seen, it could mean nothing, and the "cheap iPhone" could just be a price dropped iPhone 5 once the new device launches later this year. Which would mean you'd get options in black or white, and that's it.

Colorful handsets are starting to catch on. Nokia has been making sure you can see their Windows Phone-based devices from down the block, and it's a trend that HTC has caught onto as well. Samsung does the same thing, given enough time. We've reached a point where we don't have to make our phones colorful from a case. They just come that way out of the box.

And yet, if we look at the iOS 7 announcement, I can't help but wonder if Apple is actually going the other way entirely. If you noticed, Apple showed off their newest version of iOS on a white iPhone 5. And only on a white iPhone 5. If you go to Apple's website right now and look at iOS 7 there, it's on a white iPhone 5. And, if you know someone who's using iOS 7, then you've probably noticed that everything seems white. Like it's a white theme or something, but a theme you can't change.

If it is a theme, then hopefully that's something that Apple is changing and/or working on still back at Cupertino. If not, well, maybe the iPhone 5S will launch only in a white color.

I don't want Apple to launch the iPhone 5S in just white. Actually, I don't want them to launch it in just white or black, either. I want the next version of the iPhone hardware to have the sort of color options that the iPod Touch lineup has.

Even if it means people screaming that Apple copied Nokia. Or HTC. Or some other company.
