Rumors of a Sony-made phone/tablet hybrid device have been floating around for a while now, but it looks like we might soon see such a handset officially introduced under the name "Xperia ZU" (the U stands for "Ultra"). Xperia Blog notes that Sony has scheduled events in Germany and China on June 25, and while the company doesn't say exactly what it's planning to show at these gatherings the tagline "Looking for More? It is time for the next step" that's attached to the invitations has lead some to believe that Sony could introduce its big screen smartphone there.
In addition to these two June events, Sony has scheduled an event in France for July 4. The invitation for this shindig (which you can see above) shows the side of a device that looks to have a design that's similar to the Xperia Z, but a body that's much larger. This invitation teases that Sony's got a "big surprise" in store and reminds readers to "mark your calendars," suggesting that the Xperia Z Ultra and its large display could include stylus support.
Rounding out the Xperia Z Ultra news today is a leak with a purported spec list for the oversized phone. According to a post on ePrice, the Xperia Z Ultra (also known as Xperia ZU) will tout a 6.44-inch display, which lines up with a leaked Sony part that surfaced earlier this year. The screen resolution of the Z Ultra is said to be 1080p, and we're also told to expect a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 16GB storage, microSD slot, 2GB RAM and a 3,000mAh battery. Sony is reportedly packing in 8-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras as well.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is still very much a citizen of Rumorville at this point, but if the reports surrounding it hold true, it could be an impressive little device. We've seen many Android manufacturers continue to make screen sizes larger and larger in recent months, and while these big phones aren't for everyone, the Xperia ZU and its huge 6.44-inch screen could be an interesting option for someone that doesn't believe there is such a thing as "too big." What do you think of the Xperia ZU based off of these rumors? Would you carry a smartphone with a 6.44-inch display?
