After starring in several leaks, including in some "in the wild" photos last night, Sprint's Amethyst Purple Samsung Galaxy S III is finally official. The new device is now available for purchase from Sprint's website for $99.99 with a two-year contract and $50 mail-in rebate. Any consumers that switch to Sprint can instantly shave an extra $100 off of the price of the unit, making it free on contract, thanks to a limited time promotion that's open to new Sprint customers that port their number from another carrier. Sprint's full retail price of the Galaxy S III is set at $549.99.
As expected, the spec list of Sprint's Amethyst Purple Galaxy S III is just like the big yellow carrier's other GSIII variants. That means that buyers will be getting a 4.8-inch 1280x720 HD Super AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel rear and 1.9-megapixel front cameras, 16GB built-in storage, microSD card slot, 4G LTE connectivity and a 2,100mAh battery to power the whole package. The device also comes preloaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running beneath Samsung's TouchWiz skin.
It may seem kind of strange to see Sprint and Samsung introducing a new Galaxy S III color right before the arrival of the Galaxy S 4, but the combination of this new hue along with Sprint's reduced pricing could generate some new interest in the Galaxy S III nearly 10 months after its initial Now Network launch. Plus, it's always good to see a phone being offered in more color options, especially when the new shade is one that we don't see terribly often in the smartphone world. If the Galaxy S III's new Amethyst Purple outfit is striking your fancy, you can find the phone and its "Add to Cart" button right here.
