According to a source speaking to Bloomberg, Apple is currently planning to introduce a "smaller, cheaper" iPhone model that could debut in late 2013. The tipster claims that Apple is currently considering pricing the device between $99 and $149. Another source added that Apple has been interested in creating a cheaper iPhone in order to make a device that'd appeal to customers in developing countries, though one person claims that Apple has spoken with at least one major U.S. operator about its plans.
Details on the cheaper iPhone itself are light, but Bloomberg suggests that the device could use cheaper parts. Apple typically reduces the pricing on older iPhone models when it launches a new unit, like the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 that are currently available for $100 and $0 on contract, but a this new low-cost model could be a way for the Cupertino firm to get an even more affordable handset onto shelves and into emerging markets. Apple could also use this new, cheaper model as a way to more quickly eliminate the iPhones that use the old 30-pin connector.
