Where one keeps their phone is usually a sacred and clean place that is specifically meant for phones and phones alone. That means keeping all dangerous threats to our phones far, far away. These dangerous items can range anywhere from loose change to most liquids, which is all very risky when taken into consideration how fragile our phones really are. Where do you like to keep your phone?
My “phone home” has been relocated several times. For the longest time it was just my front pocket, but that was a simpler time where I only carried basic flip or messaging phones and they were much smaller. Since the phones I started carrying have become so large, I now have to carry my phone in larger areas like a wristlet or a purse. There was a time where I experimented with putting my phone in my back pocket, and while it never broke, it was really never that comfortable to sit on either. I have a couple of friends who have put their phones in their back pocket for so long that they don’t even notice they’re back there anymore, so that might just be a “me” thing.
That’s for when I’m moving about, though. When I’m working, my phone is either charging in the other room to keep away from distractions, or if I’m just browsing at my computer then it’s usually off to my left. In fact, anywhere I’m at where I’m just sitting and I have my phone out, if I’m able to I will place it face up to my left. It doesn’t make much sense to me because I’m right handed, but maybe I started putting it to the left because it would get in the way of my right hand. What can I say, I like to live life on the edge; you know, change it up a bit. I don't know. People who live dangerously (like me) like to have things on their left.
Like when I have my phone on my nightstand - to my left - before I go to sleep. Except on those off nights where I’m waiting for an important phone call early in the morning, I’ll put my phone under my pillow so the vibration and sounds of the alarm can wake me up. This always makes me nervous because more than one time I have knocked my phone off the bed in my sleep and it didn’t do its job the way I’d hoped it would. Generally, the volume is loud enough to wake me up from the night stand, but being a heavy sleeper I generally have to make it the most obnoxious sounding alarm I can find and sometimes that in itself can just put me in an off mood for the entire day.
While driving, I keep my phone silenced and shut in the island I have between the driver’s side and the passenger seat. I don’t like to know when I get a call or a text because I don’t like to be tempted to answer it while I’m driving. Although I’d like to be able to say I have enough self control not to look at it, I’d be lying if I said so. Even if it’s just on silent, I can see it light up and I’ll glance at it just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things out of the corner of my eye. So, I leave it locked away until I arrive at my destination, and then I’ll reply to any missed messages or calls I have received. This is the most effective method for me to drive without being distracted. The only time I have my phone out is when I need to charge it in my car. I think this whole "I like to be safe when I'm driving" paragraph just threw off my dangerous facade. Oh well.
I find that since I keep my phone in the same places everyt time, I don’t have a problem finding my phone. The only time my phone gets lost is when my son is using it, and I’m pretty sure he just drops it off wherever he knows I won’t go looking for it. But other than that, it’s always in the same places.
