Microsoft held its big launch event for Windows Phone 8 last week, giving us a rundown on the new version of its mobile platform and the first devices that'll be powered by it. And while the company is aware that Windows Phone is small in comparison to the likes of Android and iOS, it's hoping for its piece of the market to grow swiftly. Speaking at a Windows 8 event in Israel, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer admitted that Windows Phone is "still relatively small," but that he expects volumes of the platform "to really ramp quickly."
According to Reuters, Ballmer went on to say that he feels the work that Microsoft has done with the likes of HTC, Nokia and Samsung will allow it to create a strong third player in the smartphone world. The exec also said that his firm will be doing more advertising and promotion of Windows Phone 8, Surface and Windows 8 than it's ever done for any of its previous products.
Recent market share reports have shown that Microsoft is quite a bit behind both Google and Apple in terms of U.S. mobile platform market share, and the Redmond company is still trailing RIM as well. While we'll just have to wait and see whether Microsoft can climb the ladder a bit with Windows Phone 8, the fact that the company has several new devices launching soon on three of the big four major U.S. carriers certainly helps its odds, as does the fact that Microsoft recently promised that Windows Phone 8 will offer 46 of the top 50 smartphone apps. Now that the launch is finally near, how many of you are considering picking up a Windows Phone 8 device?
