Sounds like the Amazon Kindle Fire may soon be getting some competition at the $199 price point. During a recent investor meeting, NVIDIA teased its plans for a project dubbed "Kai." Introduced by Rob Csonger, NVIDIA's VP of Investor Relations, the aim of the Kai platform is to make it easier to bring quad-core Android 4.0 tablets to market with a $199 price tag. This will be accomplished by taking advantage of "the secret sauce" inside Tegra 3, which Csonger explains will allow cheaper devices to be built thanks to the progress NVIDIA has made when it comes to reducing power consumption from a product's display as well as being able to use lower cost components inside the tablet.
So far Kai sounds like a sort of reference design to help others build lower cost Android tablets. NVIDIA didn't touch on what kinds of tablets we might expect to see as a result of Kai or when they might be coming, but the rumor mill has claimed a couple of times that Google and ASUS may be prepping a Tegra 3 Nexus tablet with a price point of around $199, so perhaps that device will be one of the products to borrow ideas from Kai.
