Apple just announced that iOS 5 will be available for download starting October 12th and will be available as a free download for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, and third and fourth generation iPod touch. iOS 5 includes several new features including a new notifications system, Notification Center, Twitter integration, Newsstand, Reminders, iMessage, wireless sync and activation, and others. You can find a full rundown here. Developers, you can expect a gold master build of iOS 5 sometime today, October 4th.

Also launching on October 12th is iCloud, which allows users to backup documents, mail, contacts, etc. Users will be given 5GB of storage for free, with the ability to purchase more if needed. Meanwhile, iTunes Match will be hitting the U.S. at the end of October for $24.99 per year. The service will scan your existing music library, regardless of where your music came from, and offer up 256kbps songs for download onto your device.

Apple also introduced a new app called Cards, which will allow users to create custom greeting cards on their iDevice. After making the card, Apple will handle the mailing process and will send a push notification to your device when the card is delivered. Each card will cost $2.99. Cards will be available as a free download on October 12th.

Another new app that made its debut today is Find My Friends, which will, you guessed it, allow users to locate their iOS device-toting friends on a map. Of course, users can set privacy levels depending on when/if they want to be found. Expect Find My Friends to launch on October 12th. Purchased music, TV shows, apps, books and Photo Stream do not count against the storage limit. iTunes Match will be available starting in the US later this month for $24.99 a year.
