On Friday we saw Google tweet that its cafes have been "baking something sweet," and included a photo of a ton of Android Gingerbread cookies. So what are they going to do with all of those treats? According to the folks at Android Central, they'll be passed out at tomorrow's Web 2.0 Summit. The rumor goes like this: the Web 2.0 Summit begins tomorrow in San Francisco, and Google CEO Eric Schmidt will be giving a speech to kick the whole thing off. Labeled simply as "A Conversation with Eric Schmidt," no topics are specifically mentioned, leading some to believe that we'll finally see Gingerbread officially announced.
This is the umpteenth time we've seen a rumor saying that Gingerbread will be arriving soon, although with all of the hints Google has been dropping recently, one of the rumors is bound to be right. I'm not sure that I completely buy it this time, because with all of the big changes baked into Android 2.3, I would think that Google would want their own event to make the announcement. At the very least, I would expect them to make the announcement on a day without any planned events or anything major like that. Then again, perhaps Eric Schmidt would like to take advantage of the time provided at the Summit to formally announce Gingerbread. After all, the event is already planned and there will be quite a few people paying attention, probably even more now thanks to these rumors. Schmidt is taking the stage tomorrow, so we may not be on the edge of our seats much longer (that's good, because we've been waiting so long that I'm about to slip off of the edge of my seat).
