Just a quick flashback to October 15th, 2008 - six days before I received my pre-ordered G1, I wrote a post called The Face of Android. For those who don't feel like a trip down memory lane (or prefer video over text), I'll summarize. A company called The Astonishing Tribe, or TAT, had contributed to the Android interface and was thought by some to be working on some SUPER sexy designs for upcoming versions. Well, looks like it's time for an update.
I am happy to report.. or rather, speculate, that we can expect some mind-blowing Android action from TAT in the not-too-distant future. I recently posted a video in which we see an Android UI thought to be associated with the release of the HTC Hero. An astute observer over at the xda-developers website noticed that the area where the imaginary finger touches the screen is indicated by a white circle with a ring around it - and that this is also found in demo videos by TAT. (Seen in the video below called Asia Cute.)
Well, I've got good news for you, Sunshine. TAT has been working long and hard on some killer interface designs. And a couple look like they could be headed for an incarnation of Android. I'm just guessing - but I'd like to think I'm making educated guesses. O.K., it's probably wishful thinking. Some of their vids are definitely concept-only, but even so... wow. Hopefully these samples are indicative of the general flavor we can expect in the real world of 2010.
First up, the 3D "eyetracking" UI, which would most likely use accelerometers to control the movement of graphical layers:
