Now that the rest of the world is gearing up for WiMAX, LTE, and other 4G solutions, good ol' T-Mobile is ready to roll out their long awaited 3G network here in the USA. CNET's Kent German reported that he tracked down T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan in Barcelona this week and asked him when the magic switch will finally be flipped. Akhavan "didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer," wrote German.
Wow. That's almost a launch window!
German goes on to say that T-Mob's head honcho told him his company will soon have "the best" 3G network in the States, and that rollout will start in major metro areas. T-Mobile USA's Peter Dobrow then corroborated his boss's claims, saying that 3G in the USA was a go for the first half of this year.
Why the long wait? Blame Uncle Sam. Apparently T-Mob's had all kinds of problems getting the government to sign off on the upgrade and rollout.
Meanwile, Akhavan also said that T-Mobile will be launching an Android device of some sort in the fourth quarter of this year. But he wouldn't say which device or what part of the world it will launch in.
