In case the Verizon iPhone rumor from a few days ago wasn't enough, we've got another one for you today. This time the news comes from Daring Fireball's own, John Gruber, someone who has had a pretty good track record with Apple rumors in the past. Gruber has said that a CDMA iPhone, codenamed N92, has reached "engineering verification test" status, which is one step below "design verification test," the kind of testing that the original prototype iPhone 4 was undergoing when it was found in a bar. This means that the CDMA iPhone is only a couple of steps away from actually being produced.
As with all rumors, especially those concerning the Verizon iPhone, you should take this news with a few grains of salt. Gruber explained that none of this a done deal and that the CDMA iPhone may not have anything to do with Verizon. A CDMA iPhone could go to any number of carriers, including Sprint or any of the international CDMA networks. Many expect Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg to unveil the CDMA iPhone during his CES 2011 keynote, but I'm not so sure. Like I've said in the past, I don't believe Steve Jobs would let Seidenberg take the wraps off of one of Apple's products, especially one that is as highly anticipated as the Verizon iPhone.
