While we haven't heard any official announcements, it looks like Sprint is getting ready to launch its 4G WiMAX service in two new major metropolitan areas. Engadget and Android Police are reporting getting an intermittent 4G signal on some HTC EVO 4Gs in both New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, respectively. While it appears that users in New York City have only received notifications on their devices that a "4G network is available," Android Police reported being able to get download speeds 2.66 Mbps using a 4G signal in the San Francisco Bay Area. They also found a tweet from another user reporting 5 Mbps download speeds in the Bay Area. All of this news leads me to believe that Sprint is testing a WiMAX signal in these areas so that they can flip the switch and make it official soon. It's surprising that Sprint hasn't started 4G service in these areas considering that they're so heavily populated. Then again, it's probably pretty difficult to blanket NYC and San Francisco with a strong cell phone signal, especially on the 2500 MHz spectrum that WiMAX uses.
