Hold on to your butts! (Kudos to anyone that knows that reference.) What all of us Android fans have been eagerly waiting for is just around the corner. Application storage on your microSD card was listed in the Google Code Android Issues page as Issue 1151, and has recently been changed to “Future Release” status.

Up until yesterday I never encountered any issues with memory on my Nexus One or any other Android phone that I have owned (Hero, Eris, Motorola Droid, etc.). Since I will not be buying an HTC Droid Incredible, I had to get my Sense fix on my Nexus, so I loaded the Desire ROM to my device. The problem that I encountered is that the Desire ROM is too big to fit on the phone’s internal memory. As a result, I received my first low memory prompt after reinstalling my applications. (At that point, I realized I have turned into a free application hoarder.)

Anyway, this is an ever growing problem as new applications are flooding Android Market and end users are filling their phones with a stock pile of random applications. The last thing people want out of a phone is a memory limitation, and this native fix will aim to solve that problem with simply allowing you to install applications to the SD card. The only drawback I see coming from this will be the speed of applications. I know that installing applications to the SD card on Windows Mobile had the tendency to make applications lag a little more than the ones installed on the internal memory. Hopefully that won't be the case here.

The guys over at Phandroid believe we will see this in the upcoming Froyo 2.2 update, but I'm interested to hear from you.  What do you guys think?  Will we see it soon?
