We've been hearing rumors about a new iPhone SE model for what feels like years, but today that device has finally been made official.
The second generation iPhone SE has just been announced by Apple. The design is similar to the iPhone 8, complete with a 4.7-inch display, aluminum and glass design, and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Things are a bit different inside, though, because this new iPhone SE features the same A13 Bionic processor as the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.
The back of the new iPhone SE is home to a 12MP camera with f/1.8 aperture, portrait mode support, and 4K video capture up to 60fps as well as 1080p video recording up to 60fps. Around front there's a 7MP selfie cam with portrait mode support for your selfie needs.
Below that selfie camera is a 4.7-inch 1334x750 LCD screen, and below that is a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the Home button. There's a Lightning port on the bottom of the iPhone SE for charging and headphones — no 3.5mm headphone jack here — and Apple has also included Qi wireless charging support.
Other notable features of the new iPhone SE include gigabit-class LTE and Wi-Fi 6 support, NFC, Express Cards support, and an IP67 water and dust resistance rating that means that it can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
The new iPhone SE will be available with 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB storage options. Pricing starts at $399 for the 64GB model and goes up to $449 and $549 for the 128GB and 256GB models, respectively. Pre-orders will begin this Friday, April 17th and it'll launch one week later on April 24th.
Apple says the new iPhone SE will also be available from select carriers in the US and 40 other countries on April 24th.
Apple's new version of the iPhone SE could prove to be a pretty popular device. While some may lament the iPhone 8-like design, using it helps Apple to get the price down to the same $399 that the original iPhone SE launched at in 2016. The inclusion of Touch ID could help push upgrades for folks who aren't totally sold on Face ID unlocking, and the A13 processor ensures that this iPhone SE will be speedy for a while to come.
