The spread of dark mode throughout Google's Android apps continues today.
Google Photos is the latest Google app to go dark. Users on Reddit say that dark mode has appeared in Google Photos over the past day or two. Folks with Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S10+, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7 Pro, and Nokia 6.1 phones have all chimed in to confirm that their Google Photos app is now dark.
There doesn't appear to be a toggle to enable dark mode in Google Photos. Instead, the dark mode is activated when you switch your system-wide theme setting. To see if you've got dark mode in Google Photos, you should switch your phone's dark mode on. This is likely a server-side switch that Google is slowly rolling out, so it may not appear for everyone yet.
We know that Android Q is bringing a native dark mode with it, and so it makes sense that Google would continue to roll out dark modes for its Android apps. The good news is that while Android Q is launching to the public this fall, you don't actually need Q to get dark mode in Google Photos. That's great for folks who won't get Android Q immediately when it launches this fall and will instead have to wait for their phone's manufacturer to add their custom overlay and features before pushing Android Q out.
