Boost Mobile has had a serious security incident.
Prepaid provider Boost Mobile recently revealed that on March 14th, 2019, (via TechCrunch) the Boost website experienced a data breach in which some customers had their accounts accessed via their phone number and PIN code. Boost Mobile hasn't revealed how many customers were affected by this breach.
"On March 14, 2019, Boost.com experienced unauthorized online account activity in which an unauthorized person accessed your account through your Boost phone number and Boost.com PIN code," Boost Mobile, a Sprint MVNO, explains. "The Boost Mobile fraud team discovered the incident and was able to implement a permanent solution to prevent similar unauthorized account activity."
Boost says that it contacted affected customers with a new, temporary PIN code that they could use to access their account online and set a new, permanent PIN code.
Data breaches are a big deal because they can put your personal information in danger, and that includes this security incident with Boost Mobile. If you're a Boost customer, it's probably a good time to change your PIN code if you haven't done so recently, especially if you got a text from Boost notifying you about this data breach.
