So the reviews are in, and Apple appears to have another pretty solid iPhone coming out soon. We already know that the iPhone XS, and XS Max for that matter, are great for what they are: expensive iPhones that Apple crammed some extra stuff into to try and justify the price tag. Whether or not they actually succeeded in that comes down to the individual, but that's not really the same discussion people are having with the iPhone XR.
That's because the iPhone XR is the "cheap iPhone" for 2018. We've been in this boast, several years ago when Apple released the iPhone 5c. This was supposed to be Apple's effort to offer up a cheaper iPhone model, but the company did just about everything wrong back then. The iPhone 5c sacrificed too many features when compared to the flagship model, but it didn't cut the price tag nearly enough.
The result was a colorful iPhone that didn't really catch on.
But here we are in 2018 and Apple is trying again, and it apparently got all the major elements right this time. The iPhone XR shares the majority of its features with the iPhone XS, including the 12-megapixel camera on the back (even though there is only one, and not two), the A12 Bionic processor under the hood, the TrueDepth Camera system on the front that supports Face ID, and more. It even adopts the iPhone X design, with the minimized bezels -- and the notch.
The primary difference here is the display. Unlike the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR has that Liquid Retina LCD display. It's obviously an LCD screen, and it pales in comparison to the OLED panel that's available in the iPhone XS and XS Max (especially the latter), but it is apparently good enough for what the phone offers in other departments, and how much it costs.
Apple is also keeping up with its previous effort in showcasing some super colorful hardware, but keeping this in its mid-range lineup rather than passing it on to its flagship series. There is blue (which I really, really want), yellow, PRODUCT(RED), black, and white. Meanwhile the more expensive models come in white/silver, black, and gold.
I really do think this should be the other way around.
A friend of mine was asking whether or not he should upgrade to the iPhone XS or the iPhone XR and one of the things I said the latter handset has over the former is the colors, to which he quickly replied, "I don't care about colors." That genuinely surprised me! But I guess I understand the sentiment. I imagine most (some?) people put their phone in a case, so maybe they won't see the color anyway.
But that got me wondering: Do any of the colors offered with the iPhone XR interest you at all? I have a friend who's already preordered the yellow one and he is super excited about it. Probably as excited as I would be to get the blue option. But I want to know if Apple actually swayed you to the iPhone XR with those colors, or if it's just something you don't pay any attention to. Am I the only one who misses the super colorful smartphones from our Nokia Windows Phone days? Let me know!
