Hot on the heels of the debut of the new Palm companion phone, an even more minimalist companion phone has been announced in Japan.
The Kyocera Card Keitei KY-01L is a phone that measures around 9 centimeters tall, 5 centimeters wide, and 5 millimeters thick, and it has a weight of just 47 grams. Its size isn't the only notable thing about it, though, as the KY-01L also has an e-paper display that measures just 2.8 inches in size.
There's no camera to be found here, but there is Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support and Wi-Fi connectivity so that you can experience the web in black and white. There's Bluetooth support included as well, and its IPX2 rating will help protect the KY-01L from some light water splashes.
Finally, there's a 380mAh battery that can give you a standby time of 100 hours and a talk time of 110 minutes. The battery may sound small compared to modern smartphones — and it really is — but thanks to the KY-01L's small size and e-paper display, the battery doesn't sound to shabby.
The Kyocera Card Keitei KY-01L will launch in Japan next month at a price of 32,000 yen ($285 USD). It's not likely that we'll ever see this device in the U.S., but it's an interesting device that may be a small companion phone like that small Palm handset, but it's actually a pretty different phone, too. With its e-paper screen and lack of a camera, it could be an option for folks who really want to disconnect from their smartphone without completely disconnecting from the world around them.
