A common criticism of the iPad is that you can't do "real work" with it, but Adobe is working to change that.
Adobe today announced that it's bringing the full Photoshop CC experience to iPad in 2019. The app will let you open and edit native PSD files using Photoshop tools, utilize the app's layer system, control filters and adjustments, and more. Photoshop for iPad has also been designed with natural touch gestures in mind to speed up workflows.
Adobe also touts that the iPad version of Photoshop uses the same codebase as the desktop version, so there are no compromises on power or performance. And the good news for desktop users is that the iPad version of Photoshop will sync with the desktop version of the app using Adobe's Creative Cloud service, so you'll be able to sync your edits between devices.
Photoshop CC for iPad will arrive in 2019 with "a smaller set of features" so that Adobe can ship version 1.0 of the app to the public more quickly. Adobe plans to gradually add the rest of its features to Photoshop for iPad over time.
Apple's iPad Pro tablets have become increasingly powerful, with benchmark tests showing the latest models are faster than some laptops. With this power, it's good to see Adobe working to bring the "real" Photoshop to iPad and making the device a better option for creative professionals. Here's to hoping that the arrival of Photoshop on iPad kicks off a trend of other pro apps coming to the iPad and making it a more viable option for pros looking to replace their laptop.
In addition to Photoshop for iPad, Adobe today introduced a couple of other pro apps with mobile support. The first is Project Gemini, which Adobe describes as a new app that's "designed to accelerate drawing and painting workflows across devices". The app brings together raster, vector, and dynamic brushes, and it'll launch first on iPad in 2019.
And then there's Premiere Rush CC. This cross-device video editing app offers capture and and edit features as well as simplified color, audio, and motion graphics. There are built-in publishing tools to make it easy to send your video to social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, and since the app syncs your projects to the cloud, you can do work on your desktop, tablet, or phone.
Premiere Rush CC is now available for desktop and iOS, and it's coming to Android in 2019. Pricing starts at $9.99 per month for individuals and goes up to $19.99 per month for teams and $29.99 per month for enterprise customers. There's also a Premiere Rush CC Starter Plan that offers all of the features of the core app and lets you export up to three projects.
