Speed has always been a focus of Chrome, and today Google announced that it's taking another step toward helping speed up the web.
Google Chrome will start speed badging sites that that typically load fast or slow. This is to help users understand what's going on when they load a site, and it could help spur a site's developers to look into ways to speed up things up if their site is badged as being slow.
"Badging is intended to identify when sites are authored in a way that makes them slow generally, looking at historical load latencies. Further along, we may expand this to include identifying when a page is likely to be slow for a user based on their device and network conditions," Google explains.
The company goes on to say that its plan to identify sites as fast or slow will take place in steps and will be based on stringent criteria. Google intends to offer badging for high-quality experiences in the long-term, which could include factors beyond just speed.
As for how Chrome might surface this speed badging, Google is considering a few options, such as a loading screen or a loading progress bar.
There's no mention of when Google might actually roll out this speed badging, but it's clearly something the company is putting some thought into.
