Remember the McLaren, a Nokia-made flagship Windows Phone that was the subject of rumors in mid-2014? The device was cancelled and never made its way to market, but today a video of the unannounced handset gives us a better look at the unreleased flagship.
A video posted by Baidu user @szleaks and shared by Windows Central shows the McLaren powered on and demonstrates the 3D Touch navigation system that was supposed to launch with the phone. One feature of this system was that you could manipulate things on screen by hovering your finger above the display without touching it. That feature is shown off in this leaked video, with @szleaks scrolling through a Settings list by hovering a finger over the screen.
Another feature of the 3D Touch navigation system would allow you to hover a finger over a Live Tile and have it “explode,” with smaller popping out from the main tile and displaying information related to the main app. However, today’s leaked video doesn’t show this feature in action.
Details on this McLaren are light, but it was expected to have a 20-megapixel rear camera. The phone looks like a metal version of the Lumia 1020, and its body is pretty attractive. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to an issue with the touch navigation tech and less-than-stellar feedback from developers regarding the 3D Touch system. The good news is that Microsoft is said to be prepping two new flagship phones codenamed “Cityman” and “Talkman” and that they’re expected to arrive later in 2015 and bring an end to Windows’ long flagship phone drought.
