OnePlus is going to show off the OnePlus 2 during an event on July 27, but in true OnePlus fashion, the company has decided to do its reveal a bit differently than most phone announcements. The OnePlus 2 is going to be shown off during a virtual reality event, and to be sure that everyone can take part, OnePlus is now giving away VR headsets.
You can now order OnePlus Cardboard for no charge. However, you’ll have to pony up for shipping, which is $5 in the US, £5 in the UK, or €7 in Europe. OnePlus says that Cardboard orders will begin shipping on July 10. Residents of India will be able to get Cardboard for Rs. 99 in the third week of July.
OnePlus says that its Cardboard VR viewer meets the latest specs for Google Cardboard and that it uses “stronger, thicker material and added high-quality velcro” for enhanced durability. OnePlus Cardboard fits the OnePlus One as well as “most” phones up to six inches in size.
While the OnePlus Cardboard isn’t totally free, it sounds like a decent VR headset, and so it might be worth trying to grab one if you’ve ever wanted to see what VR is all about. OnePlus isn’t saying how long it’ll offer Cardboard or how many units it has available, but because the company did say that it’s “definitely losing money” on Cardboard, I doubt that it’ll be available for long.
