Nokia this morning reported its first quarter 2013 results, which includes the latest stats on how its Windows Phone-based Lumia smartphones have been selling. The Finnish firm reports that it shipped 6.1 million "Smart Devices" during Q1 2013. Of that total, 5.6 million were Lumia handsets, while the remaining 0.5 million were Symbian devices. Nokia also notes that around two-thirds of its Lumia sales for the quarter were Windows Phone 8-powered models. The company's 5.6 million Lumias sold is an increase from what we've seen in recent quarters, including 4.4 million units sold in Q4 2012 and 2.9 million units sold in Q3 2013.

Breaking things down geographically, Nokia reports that its Lumia volumes increased in all regions except for North America. The company's total mobile device sales for North America in Q1 2013 hit 400,000, a drop from around 700,000 in the previous quarter. 

When it comes to sales of other mobile phones, Nokia says that it managed to move 5 million full-touch Asha phones in Q1 2013, a drop from the 9.3 million units it sold in the previous quarter. That figure helped contribute to total sales of 55.8 million units for the company's Mobile Phones division.

Nokia also reported that its net sales generated a total of €5.852 billion (approximately $7.64 billion), while its operating loss for the quarter was at €150 million (around $192 million). While that's a drop from the €439 million operating profit that Nokia saw in Q4 2012, it's quite an improvement compared to €1.338 billion operating loss that it was hit with in Q1 2012.

Overall it looks like the first quarter of the new year was a bit of a mixed bag for Nokia. The good news is that while it did suffer a small operating loss, sales of Nokia's Lumia products are continuing to grow. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recognized this, saying that "people are responding positively to the Lumia portfolio," though he also admitted that Nokia's Mobile Phones division "faces a difficult competitive environment." Elop added that Nokia is planning on introducing "new innovation" in the market to address its challenges, but he didn't elaborate any further on what that may be. Nokia will be holding a conference call to discuss its results at around 8 a.m. ET/5 a.m. PT, and you can bet that we'll be listening in to see if the company has any more juicy tidbits to share.

UPDATE: During the call, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop teased that his company has a new device coming later this quarter that's expected to be given a "hero status" on a major U.S. carrier. Elop didn't go into any further detail about the device, but it's entirely possible that he was referring to the Lumia 928 for Verizon that's been leaking out quite a bit lately. The exec went on to tease that this mysterious device will kick off a season of new products.
