Good news for those of you with an HTC Android smartphone: the Taiwanese manufacturer just declared on its Facebook page that it'll begin preparing to unlock the bootloaders on some of its devices in August. The global flavor of the HTC Sensation will be the first to get a software update containing the key to its bootloader lock, with T-Mobile's Sensation 4G and Sprint's EVO 3D coming next in line. There's no concrete day for you to circle on your calendar just yet, but HTC says that it's testing the unlocking capability now and expect it to be ready for prime time in early September. That may be a tad longer than I'm sure some of you would like to wait, but it's good to see HTC keeping us up to date about the process. You can find HTC's full statement on the situation below.
So what if you're not a proud owner of one of the three above devices? HTC has said that it plans to include the unlocking capability in software updates and new shipments of its other products. Kinda vague, but it certainly gives hope to everyone that's been itching to have tweak their locked HTC handset to their heart's content. HTC has said that it'll provide updates on the progress on their unlocker every few weeks, so stay tuned! In the mean time, you can brush up on HTC's decision to unlock its bootloaders and what exactly that means for you right here.
We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!
