Android 9.0 Pie brings with it several new features, but it looks like it's causing a problem with Google's Pixel and Pixel XL phones.
Owners of the original Pixel and Pixel XL are reporting that their phones are no longer charging rapidly with some chargers after updating to Android Pie. The issue first popped up during Android P beta testing, but it's persisted even after updating to the final Pie release. Some users only have problems with third-party USB-PD cables and chargers, but others say that they're encountering the issue with Google's own chargers, too.
Today Google responded to the reports, saying that it's aware of a problem where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the Pixel and Pixel XL. The company is working on a fix that'll be released in the coming weeks.
Here's Google's full statement to Android Police:
"We're aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie. The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks."
Being able to rapidly charge is a great feature that helps users get lots of battery power in a hurry. It's understandable that Pixel and Pixel XL owners would be frustrated about having issues with that feature after updating to Android 9.0 Pie, especially after they'd gotten accustomed to having it. Here's to hoping that Google can get its fix out quickly.
