If you're still holding on to a grandfathered unlimited data plan on AT&T, prepare to pay more to continuet holding on to it.
AT&T has confirmed that it's increasing the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plan by $5 per month, effective July 2018. This means that starting next month, AT&T customers with a grandfathered unlimited data plan will pay $45 per month for it.
AT&T explains that this price increase is due to "record levels" of data use. Here's AT&T's full statement to MacRumors:
"Consumers are using mobile data at record levels and the trend is expected to continue. To help make sure we continue to provide the best service for all of our customers, a small price increase is being made at this time.
"Customers who have a grandfathered $40 data plan will receive notifications of a $5 per month rate increase for the data plan. The rate increase will take effect starting with the customer’s July, 2018 service."
The last time that AT&T increased the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plan was in March 2017 when the price went up $5 to a total of $40 per month. Unlimited data plan customers are still subject to deprioritization when they use 22GB of data in a month, after which point they may see slowed speeds in a congested service area.
Price increases are never exciting to see, but it's not too surprising that AT&T is bumping up the price of its grandfathered unlimited data plan. AT&T would likely prefer these customers move to one of its newer plans, and this change might push some to do that. The good news is that those who want to stick with their grandfathered unlimited plan can continue to do so.
